Philip Nixon has enjoyed a successful multi-award winning career as a professional photographer for over 30 years and has been commissioned by companies and organisations all over Britain. He has his own photographic library of over 80,000 images and his work has been published worldwide in countless magazines, newspapers, calendars, brochures and books.
Although he is now what he jokingly refers to as "semi-retired" he still runs popular weekly photography classes in Durham and also photographic workshops at various times throughout the year. Philip also photographs, writes and produces big screen multi-media presentations which are always in great demand and which he presents all over the country.
The subjects he has covered include, County Durham, Land of the Prince Bishops, Northumbria, St Cuthbert, Field and Fell and Drystone Wall, The Solway Firth and The Border Reivers.
In his spare time Philip's enthusiasm sees him leading photographic walks for Durham County Council as a popular part of their Guided Walks programme.
His many awards have included those for Wedding Photography, Portrait Photography, Pictorial Photography, Press and PR work and Multi-media presentations. He was a distinguished Associate member of the Royal Photographic Society, and an enthusiastic Licentiate member of the Master Photographers' Association and he was also one of the first photographers in the country to gain the prestigious Diploma in Photographic Practice.
His great enthusiasm for writing and photographing books is unbounded and he continues to travel widely and work in this capacity.
Bestseller
He supplied the photographs and text for "A Guide to County Durham" and the third edition of Durham County Council's "The County Durham Book". His first book for Breedon Books, Exploring Durham History, (1998) became a bestseller and has since been reprinted.
His last book for Breedon, Exploring Northumberland History, has received excellent reviews and is beautifully illustrated with photographs from his private collection. Portrait of Durham and Moods of County Durham , both published by Halsgrove received great critical acclaim and continue to sell well.
Philip has recently completed two further titles for Breedon Books: "Exploring Solway History" - telling the story of this enigmatic area in text and photographs- and a new lavishly illustrated work - "The Border Reivers" - covering the 400 years of turmoil and terror at the hands of the notorious Riding families.. "Exploring Cumbrian History" is his latest project for Breedon Books.
Philip originally established the business in 1976 and took his wife Val into partnership in 1982. Together they offer a comprehensive photographic service supported by a reputation of integrity and professionalism built up over the last 30 years. Fillinghams of Durham was incorporated into the business in March 2000.
